How to Avoid Making Promises You Can't Keep

Nothing is worse than a person who continually makes promises that they can't keep. This typically occurs when a person over extends themselves. This situation can happen at home or in the workplace. To stop being this type of person, consider the following.

Think about the promise before you make it. Many times promises are made in haste. Take some time to reflect on the promise before you state it.

Be honest about your capabilities. Instead of trying to always be a "yes" person, tell the requester that you are unable to complete the task that they ask of you. If you give a set of reasons, the person is likely to be much more understanding.

Keep your mouth shut. To avoid making promises that you can't keep, then don't make them in the first place. The future is always going to be uncertain and you should not promise things that may not be a sure thing.

Watch the things that you promise your children (if you have any). Parents are common offenders of making promises that they can't keep. Never tell your children things like that you'll never move or you and your spouse will never divorce.

Talk about the promise with another person. If you are unsure about a promise, talk to a loved one about it before you make it. They can give you reasons for why you should not make the promise.
